Lions add John Dorsey as a senior executive

The Detroit Lions are in full rebuild mode. Brad Holmes is the new general manager, Dan Campbell is the new head coach; and most notably, franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford will be leaving. Ahead of starting the process of rebuilding the teams roster, the Lions are also bringing in John Dorsey. Dorsey is the former general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns; he’s also heralded as one of the leagues best evaluators. Dorsey’s most recent run as a GM in the league came with the Browns.

Dorsey’s notable Cleveland Browns moves

2018

  • Traded for Jarvis Landry
  • Drafted Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward and Nick Chubb

2019

  • Traded for Odell Beckham Jr.
  • Signed Kareem Hunt and Sheldon Richardson
  • Drafted Sheldrick Redwine and Sione Takitaki

Add those to the laundry list of draft hits with the Chiefs; Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Chris Jones, Dee Ford, Kareem Hunt and Patrick Mahomes- you’ve built a solid resume of evaluating talent. When you pair the mind of Dorsey with Holmes and his scouting hits, the Lions appear to be setting themselves up well for the future. Dorsey’s ultimate downfall with both teams was with coaching, something that is already in-place for the Lions.

Currently the Lions 2021 draft stock is dismal.

  • 7th overall (first round)
  • 39th overall (second round)
  • 71st overall (third round)
  • 112th overall (fourth round)
  • 151st overall (fifth round)

With Stafford likely to be traded, the team is looking for “fair market value” in terms of what they’d like to get in return for Stafford. That particularly could mean that the Lions receive a later first-round pick as compensation; giving the Lions two first-round picks in the upcoming draft. Holmes stated that he and Campbell needed to do an entire roster evaluation, which could lead to more trades for more picks. The addition of Dorsey shows how committed the entire Lions organization is to rebuilding the team into a perennial contender.
