Trade talks are nearing the goal line for the Detroit Lions. Per Pro Football Talk, the Lions are close to agreeing a deal with veteran pass-rusher Za’Darius Smith.
PFT reports that the teams will finalize a trade tonight or Monday.
There is no suggestion about what the Lions may be sending in return. But with the Browns down to the LA Chargers and sitting at 2-6, this rumoured trade makes sense for both teams.
Several NFL insiders confirmed over the weekend that the Lions were exploring a trade for Smith. The trade market was competitive, but the Lions have desperately needed pass-rush help since Aidan Hutchinson suffered a season-ending injury in Dallas.
Smith knows the NFC North well. Spells with the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings exposed Smith to the Black and Blue division. Earlier in October, Smith confirmed he would be interested in a Detroit trade. The experienced player wanted to push for the playoffs and challenge his old teams.
In the 2024 season, Smith has notched five sacks across eight games and eight quarterback hits. The Lions are currently down to Al-Quadin Muhammad, James Houston, Isaiah Williams and Levi Onwuzurike. They desperately need help.
If they complete this move, it is a positive step forward.
