Detroit Lions hopeful as Terrion Arnold and David Montgomery target postseason return

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery and cornerback Terrion Arnold are both hopeful about returning for the team’s playoff opener in two weeks.

David Montgomery, who has been sidelined with a rib injury, participated in a full workout  on Saturday. During the first quarter of Sunday night’s game NBC’s Melissa Stark reported Montgomery told her that he “felt the best he has since the injury” and expressed confidence and excitement about being ready for the postseason. The running back, who finished the regular season with 775 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns, and 341 receiving yards, would provide a major boost to the Lions’ offense as they prepare for a deep playoff run.

Meanwhile, Terrion Arnold, who played 86 percent of the Lions’ defensive snaps this season, left Sunday’s game with a foot injury after teammate Al Quadin-Muhammad accidentally stepped on his right foot while Arnold was making a tackle on Vikings running back Aaron Jones. Arnold, who accounted for 60 tackles, 10 passes defended, and a fumble recovery this season, was unable to put weight on his leg as he was helped off the field and later taken to the locker room by medical cart.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said X-rays on Arnold’s foot were negative. Arnold, who wore a walking boot after the game, expressed confidence in his ability to return for the playoffs. “I’m playing,” Arnold told the Detroit Free Press in the locker room after the game. He said he trusted the team’s medical staff and was optimistic about his recovery during the bye week.

The Lions finished the regular season with a 15-2 record, clinching the NFC North title and a first-round playoff bye. They will face the lowest remaining seed in the divisional round of the playoffs on Jan. 18 or 19 at Ford Field. The potential returns of Montgomery and Arnold would provide a significant boost to the Lions as they look to make a run at the Super Bowl.
